Matthew 6:19, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”
The Lord Jesus here teaches us that we must not put our trust in the stability of earthly things. Change is written upon the face of all things. If, then, you have built your nest on high, then do not reckon too surely that you shall die in your nest, for the storm or the axe may fell the tree, and bring it down at an untimely hour.
And If your children are round about you in good health, then do not make too sure of them, for they may be carried to an early grave, and the parent may yet be childless.
If hitherto you have been great in the esteem of men, then think less than nothing of that; for the breath of popular applause is more fleeting than a vapor. It scarcely comes, before it goes. Those who yesterday cried, “Hosanna!” in the streets at your coming, may before tomorrow’s sun is set, be crying, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” They did that to the Master; do not marvel if they do it to His servants.
The treasures of earth are like the dew upon the grass–soon gone when the sun arises. He who builds his nest in this poor world, builds upon a tree that is marked for the axe.
This is the view that makes all mortal things insignificant to a wise and holy man. He will not put them among his treasures, for they melt before they are counted, like coins of ice. They are but as the toy coins that a child plays with, having only an imaginary value. The things which are seen are shadows; invisible things are the only substances.
Reckon then, at their real price, these transient advantages of wealth, health, or fame. Store up treasure “where neither moth nor rust destroy,” and seek for stability in eternal realities, rather than these poor earthly vanities.
The Christian’s riches are not in time, but in eternity; not in the creature, but in the Creator.
Hold all earthly things loosely, because some day you will lose them; but hold heavenly things with a death grip!
Get the feet of your joy upon the Rock of Ages, and reckon all else to be but sand at its very best!
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal!” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
